In fact, the majority of them report that CBD actually seems to work phenomenally well with the caffeine – they claim that it reduces cases of the “jitters” (which makes sense considering that CBD is a well-known anti-spasmodic), and also that it works wonders in terms of elevating mood, increasing mental acuity, and promoting general productivity.
THC oil, marijuana oil, and cannabis oil are generally associated with the same product. Essentially, they all mean the same thing. With the help of alcohol, this oil is made by extracting the resin of the female marijuana plant. Remember, the marijuana plant is the high-THC strain. The resin dissolves in alcohol and then the alcohol evaporates. The residue will consist of a thick syrup abundant in THC. This type of oil is illegal because of the high levels of THC.
This takes us to the next problem: There is no regulation around how much active CBD or THC is in each cream or how much of the compound is needed to see relief. A few weeks ago, in a bike shop–slash–coffee shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I saw a little sign for a new product on offer: a CBD lavender latte. I didn’t get one, in part because it was 80 degrees outside, and also because my experiences with CBD are somewhat mixed. I have some gummy fruit candy that puts me straight to sleep, and I found using an oil dropper on my tongue too disgusting-tasting to be worth whatever marginal benefits it may have given me. But I knew other anxious people have had good experiences with CBD, and I like coffee, so I was interested — though I did wonder if coffee (a stimulant) and CBD (a cannabinoid thought to have relaxing properties) might just cancel each other out.
So far, I’ve found that in order to feel a marked improvement in pain relief, I need a high dose of CBD (which I have yet to determine due to the unavailability and expense). However, I have found that (edible) THC has allowed me to fall asleep faster and longer compared to prescriptions such as Ambian. It also gives me a feeling of well-being. I went from only sleeping 2-3 nights a week for no more than 4 hrs per sleep, to sleeping 8 hrs per night. This alone is worth using cannabis. As you know, lack of sleep can seriously impact your pain level.
In the European Union (EU), the cultivation of certain cannabis varieties is granted provided they are registered in the EU’s Common Catalogue of Varieties of Agricultural Plant Species [27] and the THC content does not exceed 0.2% of the dried flowers of the plant [28]. In Canada, hemp is allowed to contain 0.3% THC [29], while Switzerland allows up to 1% THC [30]. In most countries, viable seeds for planting may be purchased from certified seed companies only, in order to make sure that the correct hemp variety is indeed being cultivated. Additionally, hemp may typically only be grown in agricultural fields outdoors, while indoor cultivation is usually forbidden. In some countries (e.g., The Netherlands), growing hemp is allowed only with the intent to produce fibers or seeds. As a result, the act of harvesting fiber cannabis for its CBD is a violation of narcotics laws [31]. New cannabis varieties (for example developed to yield a higher content of CBD) are not (yet) registered as approved hemp varieties, and therefore cannot be freely cultivated, while the official registration process takes several years to complete.
Outside of CBD I would ask however have you tried having him change his diet? If the IBS is food allergen related, as some studies are starting to show, CBD and the like are only effective at calming some of the symptoms. The most effective treatment is aimed at figuring out what is causing the issues to begin with by starting a food diary and instituting dietary changes. Look into a diet called “The Whole 30” to see if it’s a particular food or food type that is causing aggravation of symptoms. For many people things like Gluten, Dairy, Meat, and/or processed foods are the offending culprits and cutting these out of the diet can result in greatly reduced symptoms and improved quality of life.
Though a CBD latte might not do much for you — at least not beyond what caffeine and the placebo effect combined can do, which isn’t nothing — it’s also probably harmless in most cases, says Carson, and may even have positive benefits we aren’t yet aware of. “I suspect there’s probably some antioxidant benefit to CBD like there is with coffee,” says Carson. “There’s tons of good things in coffee that we still don’t fully understand, and I think the marijuana plant is much the same way.”
